Weekend Wrap Up

Friday

On Friday C, MK, DM, NR and I headed up to Baltimore for Budweiser's Made in America event.  We went to the DC event a week and a half ago and the Baltimore event was just as much fun!  They had an amazing cake made by Charm City Cakes (of Ace of Cakes fame), plenty of cold beer, killer DJs....and once again....it was all free!  I was most excited to see RAC after their killer performance at U Street Music Hall earlier this summer and they definitely didn't disappoint.  They had us dancing away and even played their Blue Jeans mix which is a favorite of C and I.  Savoy performed after RAC wrapped up.  I didn't really know anything about Savoy prior to the event but I fell in love with them.  Their drops were absolutely filthy and their use of a live drummer on stage added so much more to their set.  I also had the chance to meet up with AH, MM, and RM while we were in Baltimore.  They're all friends from various places in my life that happen to live in Bmore now.  It was so wonderful to catch up and I definitely see many more hang outs in our future!

Saturday

Saturday was T$'s sad but very fun going away BBQ.  T$ is moving to the windy city to start business school (like a boss!) at the end of the week.  We are going to miss her so much as she is such an integral part of our friend group!  The BBQ was at her parents' home (which was lovely) and I couldn't get over all the delicious food they made.  T$ made these ballin' Brownie Saltine Bourbon Ice Cream Sandwiches...I am totally going to make them for my next gathering...they were just too good.

After T$'s party, I headed over to Murphy's (for the first time since May...can you believe it!?) to meet up with CM, SC, and P to celebrate their big move into their new house!  AD, KC, and KB ended up coming to meet us and we had the BEST night.  They're all such fun people and we always have a wonderful time when we get together.  After the bar closed, CM asked me if I wanted to come and see their new house...I obviously said yes!  Their new place is absolutely gorgeous and after getting the official tour, we sat on their deck and had a few drinks with their neighbors (who were absolutely CRAY btw) before calling it a night.

I'm not gonna lie, the whole post bar interaction was a little bit strange for me.  I think P and I will always be in a weird place with each other.  I'm over it...but spending time with him is comfortable and we always end up talking in our own little corner when we get together in groups.  He was making weird comments though.  The "I missed yous" are out of place and him drunkenly telling his neighbor that we were getting married in June on the beach was really really uncomfortable.  Sigh

Sunday

Waking up in the same place with SC is always fun and our Sunday morning started out with a coffee date and helping her decide how to arrange their living room furniture while the boys did god knows what.  We all hung out for a few hours before I headed home.  I was planning on having a quite day but I got an amazing surprise from C and DM when they decided to show up for some poolside relaxing.  It was so nice to catch up on our weekend adventures and make some plans for next!

Song of my Summer

There are songs that transport you back to a certain time.  Taking Back Sunday will always be junior year of high school and Beating Heart Baby throws me back to senior year.  Too Young To Fight It was my anthem of summer of 2007 and  Girl Talk reminds me of junior year of college.  Semi-Charmed Life still brings back insanely vivid memories of my 21st birthday, meeting E for the first time, and our absolutely electric first kiss.

I've been thinking a lot lately about what the song to transport me back to this summer will be and I think I've finally settled on Daft Punk's Get Lucky.

It's been the background for so many events...be it dinner parties, dancing at U Hall, or relaxing at someone's pool.

I will say that Zedd's Clarity (also the soundtrack for a lot of amazing nights) and Blurred Lines (because let's be real here...it's IMPOSSIBLE to escape this song) were close runners up though.

What's your song of the summer?

Weekend Wrap Up

Wednesday

Wednesday was totally not the weekend but I had to share the amazing time I had at Budweiser's Made in America event.  For those of you who aren't familiar, Budweiser is bringing mini concerts around the country in preparation for their Made in America Festival over Labor Day weekend.  The event was so much more than I expected!  The concert was 100% free with free beer, free Georgetown Cupcake, free Ben's Chili Bowl, and tons of swag.  The DC event featured Kill Paris and Big Gigantic.  Both were incredible and we had a great time dancing around to the music!  In fact, we had such a good time that we're venturing up to Baltimore Friday for their Made in America event.

Friday

On Friday we headed back to Yard's Park for a picnic dinner and their free concert.  It was the perfect night to sit outside and enjoy some live music.  After the picnic, we headed back to CA and TD's apartment for some pizza and card games.  There was a pretty intense round of Apples to Apples and Horse Racing.

Saturday

via Amazon
I was feeling particularly lazy on Saturday afternoon...this is an actual conversation I had with my roommate on:

Roomie: What are you doing today?
Me: Well...I'm on track to finish the entire second season of Hell on Wheels by 4pm.

What can I say?  Sometimes you just need a lazy afternoon!  In other news, I am SO excited for the new season to start on Saturday!  I think they've laid some really interesting ground work for season 3.  Also, I was completely shocked by the evolution of The Swede's character over the course of season 2.  Homeboy completely went off the deep end.

I eventually dragged myself off the couch and met up with C for a night of fun!  We started off with a leisurely drink on DC9's rooftop (FYI-They have $3 mixed drinks and $2.50 buds/bud lights until 8pm every night of the week...you should probably go there) where we caught up on our weeks and I heard all about her Mad Decent Block Party adventure.  After our drink, we were craving some dessert so we decided to check out the Menchies that had opened earlier that day.  I think Menchies may have stolen away FroZenYo's place as my favorite froyo place in the district.  They have so many amazing flavors (I tried the Vanilla Snow and Cookies and Cream...and I'm DYING to try their Graham Cracker.  I hope it rotates in soon) and a really interesting toppings bar.  They even have peanut butter sauce to put on your froyo.  You definitely need to stop by Menchies next time you find yourself on U Street.  Post Menchies, we hid out from the rain at Solly's while we waited for the rest of the crew to meet us.

When NR, DC, MK, and AD arrived, we headed over to U Hall for Pleasurekraft (where we ran into D, K, GA, and CO...so fun to have such a big group to dance with!).  I'd never seen Pleasurekraft before but I thought they were amazing!  We danced for HOURS and I seriously don't think I stopped smiling once.

Sunday

On Sunday, I met up with Jbunny and MH for brunch at Ping Pong Dim Sum.  The food was delicious, the make your own mimosas were a lot of fun, and the girl talk was most excellent.  We hadn't been very good at keeping in touch with MH post college but now that she's back in DC, we've been able to reconnect!  It felt like no time had passed and I am definitely looking forward to getting together more often.  Post-brunch I headed over to NR's to lay by his pool with C, GA, IR, CO and a few new friends.  It was the perfect relaxing end to a happy weekend.

Weekend Wrap Up

Friday

My Friday started out with some exciting news at work (that I will be sharing next Monday!) and continued to get better from there.  After work, I headed over to C's for drinks with her, NR, DM, SV and a few of SV's friends.  It was fun to catch up on everyone's weeks and listen to some music.  A highlight of the night was definitely the homeboy above putting on oven mitts and dancing around the living room...by himself...yeah...we didn't really know what was going on either haha.  Afterwards, C, DM, and I headed over to U Hall for their tribute to Daft Punk and French House music.  Will Eastman DJed and he was AMAZING as always.  I ended up calling it a bit of an early night though.  I was feeling a little bit overwhelmed from all the exciting things that happened during the day and needed to get some sleep!

Saturday

On Saturday afternoon, one of the JLW ladies got married!  The ceremony was just for family but there was a large reception afterwards that we attended.  Everything was beautiful!  The bride was gorgeous, the groom seemed so happy, and the groom's mother had crafted so many unique details (like the sign above).  It really made the day special.  They also had a ton of lawn games (I obviously challenged everyone to bocce), amazing BBQ for dinner, and a cupcake tower.

Post-wedding, I headed over to Whitlow's to celebrate CM selling his house!  I am so thrilled for him.  CM is P's roommate but we've managed to maintain a really great friendship.  In fact, we were able to get a big group of the Murphy's crew together.  We spent almost every weekend together last summer so it's been strange to barely see each other this year.  It was absolutely wonderful to all get together and catch up!

Sunday

via Yelp
I started off my Sunday with brunch at Agora with C, DM, MK, and JB.  Agora has such a delicious brunch.  I decided to try something different this time and ordered the Pastirma Eggs Benedict and they definitely did not disappoint.  After our awesome brunch we weren't ready to part ways yet and we headed over to James Hoban's to sit on the patio, have a beer, and chat.  JK was able to join us once she got off of work which was a nice treat!  After our Sunday Funday, I headed home to do some laundry (yay for being an adult!) and watch True Blood with the roomie and Rach.  All in all, it was a most excellent weekend.

Stuff I Like

1. Cake Mix Cookie Bars

via Parent Pretty
I made Parent Pretty's Cake Mix Cookie Bars for a work event last week and they were a huge hit!  They require very few ingredients, take no more than 10 minutes to mix up, and are absolutely delicious.  I opted to use peanut butter M&Ms and mini chocolate chips as my add ins but you can really get creative with your ingredients.

2. Fruitvale Station

via
I went to see Fruitvale Station at E Street Cinema (whoop! for knocking another item off my Summer in the City list) on Monday night.  It was the most powerful film I've seen in a long time.  If you're not familiar with Fruitvale Station, it recounts the shooting of Oscar Grant by a BART Police Officer in 2009.  It had me reflecting a lot on how the circumstances of one's birth impact your life.  As a blonde, middle class, white girl, I would never be subjected to the kind of treatment you see Oscar receive from the officers in the film.  I think it's an important topic to touch on and get people questioning.  I can't recommend going to see the film enough (bring your tissues).  You can check out the full trailer here.

3. Luster Now! Toothpaste

A tube of Luster Now! Toothpaste was included in my Something Blue Voxbox from Influenster and I absolutely LOVED the product!  Seriously, if you need some quick whitening for an upcoming event, this is the product to try.  You notice results after the first 1-2 uses...I know my smile is definitely looking whiter.

4.  Panera Bread Chilled Shrimp & Soba Noodle Salad

via
I headed over to Panera this weekend to grab my favorite steak salad...and I was momentarily disappointed to discover my Panera doesn't serve it over the summer.  My disappointment was quickly replaced once I tried their new Chilled Shrimp & Soba Noodle Salad though!  The flavors are light and refreshing...just right for summer...and although it's light, it manages to fill you up.

5. Settlers of Catan

I met up with C and NR last night for a game of Settlers of Catan at Board Room (if you're in DC, you NEED to go here...such a fun bar filled with all your favorite games).  This game was hard y'all!  It's full of strategy as you try to build settlements and out game your opponents.  It was my first time playing but I think I mostly picked it up and I had a lot of fun!  Bonus fact, Sheldon from Big Bang Theory is a big fan of the game.

Weekend Wrap Up

Friday/Saturday

via Amazon
I came down with a cold on Friday which killed most of my fun weekend plans.  I spent Friday night/all day Saturday lying on the couch, reading, and watching movies.  On the plus side, I finally had a chance to watch Moonrise Kingdom!  It's such a great movie.  The cast and acting are fantastic and I found the story line to be sweet.  If you're looking for a fun, feel good movie, I recommend giving this a watch.

Sunday

via Yelp
On Sunday I was feeling better so I ventured out Lavagna to brunch and meet with my book club. Lavagna's brunch is good but with all the other fantastic restaurants in DC, it wouldn't be my first choice.  I had the crab omelet (and I've previously had the goat cheese omelet) and while tasty, it was nothing particularly special.  However, they do have $12 bottomless mimosas which is an excellent deal.  Book club itself was fantastic!  We read The Engagements this month and it spawned some great conversations about the tradition of diamond engagement rings, how advertising creates demands for products, life in Boston, Whitey Bulger (I promise that segue made sense in our discussion), and human trafficking.  I'm so happy I ended up placed in such a fun/smart group of women!

via
After brunch, I headed over the DM's place to meet up with C and MK.  We watched Mean Girls and played this ridiculous Pokemon drinking game like the adults that we are.  We eventually meandered over to Public for Sunglasses Sunday...the music was EXCELLENT but it wasn't terribly well attended...and then down to the Gtown Waterfront for the Soundwaves Boat Party.

The boat party was such a great time!  Robert Moses performed and they were wonderful.  They seriously had us dancing the whole time we were on the boat!  It rained a little bit but that only added to the experience.  Plus, it was amazing to see all the monuments lit up as we sailed up and down the Potomac.  I definitely recommend checking out one of their boat cruises before the end of the summer.
