Weekend Wrap Up

We were really excited about our Texas sized margaritas...
After being cooped up on the couch last week, I was DYING to get out and about this badly that we started our weekend shenanigans on Thursday.  We hit up Austin Grill for Texas sized margaritas and some delicious Mexican food.  We hung out in the bar, shared stories, and a whole bunch of laughs!

When we were walking to the metro at the end of the night, we stumbled upon this brass band playing Rack City and This is How We Do was pretty awesome!

It had been waaaaaaay too long since we'd gone out dancing in Adams Morgan so we headed out to Brass Monkey.  Brass Monkey has always been one of our favorite bars in Adams Morgan...the music always makes you want to dance and the drinks are cheap!  It was the perfect choice for Friday since the guys could hang out in the karaoke bar downstairs and we could dance around like crazy people to "Call Me Maybe" and other terrible yet so good pop songs upstairs.

One of our very good friends has his birthday coming up on Tuesday so we spent all day Saturday celebrating!  We started out the afternoon at Bugsy's to watch a bit of The Caps game.  I'd never been to Bugsy's before but it was a neat little bar with a great atmosphere.  The beer was a little more expensive than other bars in Old Town but I would definitely go there again.

We spent the rest of the evening at Murphy's (seriously, do we ever hang out anywhere else!?) and it was so much fun!  It was great to spend some time catching up with old friends and making some new ones.  The crowd at Murphy's is the absolute best.

We started out our Sunday morning with breakfast at Elsie's Magic Skillet, a little hole in the wall diner.  Their big greasy but delicious breakfasts were just what we needed to get ourselves going for the day.

Since the weather was so nice, we spent the rest of the afternoon at Mount Vernon.  We toured the mansion, walked around by the water, and sat on Washington's back porch and enjoyed the view.  It really was a perfect day!  And since we just didn't want it to end...we added in a trip to the movies to see The Raven.  It wasn't quite as good as I thought it would be but I enjoyed it!

As you can tell it was a very busy weekend...I almost feel like a need another day off to recover!  What did you do this weekend?

Junk Drawer

Everyone has one...that junk drawer where things without a place get thrown and where you ditch miscellaneous items you need to tidy up in a hurry before company's coming.  I have taken this concept to a whole new level.  I don't just have one junk drawer...I have four.

I decided to man up this week and clean them all out.  Here are the completely unnecessary things I hoard in my junk drawers:

1. Junk Mail
2. Old Greeting Cards
3. Seasonal Candy (hey, if I can't see it I won't eat it, right?)
4. Free Beauty Samples
5. Chargers for electronics I no longer own

Now that I've cleaned them all out, I'm hoping I can keep them organized!

What do you keep in your junk drawer?

Nail Files

The Nail Files

This week's mani was inspired by this pin on Pinterest.

The polishes I used are OPI Sweet Memories and Done Out In Deco.  I used a piece of scotch tape to get a straight line when adding the purple.

Stuff I Like

1. Black Bean Quesadillas

via Budget Bytes
I've been making a lot of recipes from Budget Bytes lately and the Black Bean Quesadillas were my latest try.  I never realized how easy quesadillas are to make!  The recipe was filling, easy to freeze for eating later in the week, and delicious whether it was toasted in a skillet at home or heated up in the microwave at work.  Next time, I'm going to try it with some BBQ chicken.

2. SVU Marathons

While I've been stuck on the couch, Elliott and Olivia have been keeping me company.  No matter how many episodes of SVU I watch, I never get bored of it!

3. Contagion

I had wanted to see Contagion when it first came out but I never got around to it.  I finally saw it last week and I really enjoyed it!  I thought it did a great job of portraying how society would break down if an epidemic like this occurred.  It was also a little unsettling to watch since it's a disaster you can really imagine happening.

4. Everything is Illuminated

After reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, I couldn't wait to get my hands on Everything is Illuminated.  It's an absolutely beautiful story and explores human nature, family history, and the blurred line between good and evil.  I'm absolutely dying to see the movie now.  Eugene Hutz from Gogol Bordello is in it...and how could you ever go wrong when he's in a movie?

5. Amy's Indian Meals

While I've been couch bound, I've also been eating a lot of frozen meals.  My favorite has been Amy's Indian Meals.  They're filling but not salty lot of frozen meals are.  I've only tried the Paneer Tikka so far but I'm looking forward to trying more soon!

Oh, How Pinteresting

It's been a while since I've participated in The Vintage Apple's Oh, How Pinteresting link up, so I thought I'd share some of my recent pins today.  I always have fun looking at everyone else's pins as well.  Enjoy!

Weekend Wrap Up

via Metromix
The weather was gorgeous on Friday so we decided to spend it enjoying an outdoor happy hour at Tony and Joe's.  I love spending time at the Georgetown Waterfront so Tony and Joe's is one of my favorite places to hang out.  The drinks aren't too expensive ($8 for a rum punch) and it's a great place to do some people watching.

As the night went on, we met a group of Royal Marines.  We didn't believe they were Royal Marines, so they told us they would show us how to do "Royal Marine Shots".  They ordered shots of tequila, poured salt in their hands, and then handed one of our guy friends a lime.  They snorted the salt, took the shot, and then asked to have the lime squirted in their eyes.  It was RIDICULOUS!

I cut my foot on a new pair of shoes last week and ended up with a nasty infection.  I had a fun trip to Urgent Care on Saturday and then the doctor ordered me not to walk on it for a few days.  I'm still couch bound and it's slowly driving me INSANE.  I'm hoping to be mobile enough to attend my first bocce game tomorrow.  Keep your fingers crossed for me!

4. Marshmallows
5. Nicki Minaj
6. Roller Coasters
7. Zumba

What's on your list?

Journey Forward (10)

This week's Journey Forward topic is to discuss the biggest obstacle towards achieving your word.

It was easy for me to find my biggest obstacle...overcommitting myself.  When I set out my goal to grow in 2012, I wanted to focus on maturing, exploring new interests, and leaving behind old behaviors that aren't working for me anymore.

I was perhaps I little over enthusiastic about exploring new interests and I joined a book club, applied to the Junior League (I start this summer!), and became part of a bocce team.  While I think it's important to try a few new things before picking an activity you want to stick with, I think I threw myself into too many at once.  It can be hard to truly evaluate what you like to do when you're rushing from one activity to another.  However, our book club has started to fizzle out and now that Junior League applications are over, I can really focus on my bocce league.  I'm hoping focusing on one new activity at a time will allow me to evaluate which ones I want to stick with.

Overcommitment has also been an obstacle towards maturing.  As part of this, I really want to focus on my relationships with my friends and family.  My already busy weeks become even more packed with happy hours and dinner dates...and it can be hard to squeeze everyone in.  These nights out also take a toll on my finances and for me, financial well being and maturing go hand in hand.

My overcommitted schedule can make it easy to revert back to old behaviors.  When you're exhausted at the end of a busy week, it's much easier to return to picking up take out instead of cooking at home, zoning out in front of the TV instead of reading a book, or sleeping in instead of hitting the gym.  I try to be aware of this and push myself through anyway but it can be hard.

I am hoping to continue to overcome this obstacle in the coming weeks.  I think a little bit of overcommitment is part of my Journey Forward.  I have to try out lots of new things to learn what I like the best.  Overcommitting myself in the short term should also help me understand how to manage my time in a way that is most beneficial for me.

Stuff I Like

1. Express Columnist Pants

I've always worked in offices where it's acceptable to wear jeans every day.  As a result, I don't have very many business clothes.  I've been trying to build my business wardrobe lately and my latest addition are these Columnist Pants from Express.  They are unbelievably comfortable and they're long enough for my super long legs!  Once I've got a little more money saved, I'm going to get them in black as well.

2. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

I recently read Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and I absolutely loved it!  The writing style is a bit different but after a few pages, I got used to it.  I love how the author brings the characters to life and alternates between their perspectives.  You really feel like you get to know them.  I liked it so much that I've started reading his other book, Everything is Illuminated.

3. Dirty Blonde Flirtinis

I mentioned that Chad and John bought me Dirty Blonde Raspberry Flirtinis for my birthday and I tried one last night.  It was delicious and such a fun treat!  It was a little sweet though so I would only drink one or 2 at a time.  I also seriously felt like I was channeling Vince from The Mighty Boosh while I was drinking it.

4. Puffins

via Bakerella
I made Bakerella's Mini Pancake Muffins...aka puffins...for breakfast the other day and they were delicious!  They're quick to mix up in the morning for a nice homemade breakfast before work.  If you're not a fan of chocolate chips, you can sub them for blueberries.  I also found this recipe for full sized Cinnamon Sugar Swirl Puffins on Pinterest.  I'm looking forward to giving it a try as well!

5. Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23

I'll admit, I was skeptical about Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 before it premiered.  I tuned into the first episode just to check it out...and I was pleasantly surprised by how hilarious it was!  I mean James van der Beek plays can you go wrong there?  I'm excited to see what happens on the rest of the season since I think it's going to keep me laughing!  Did you watch the premiere?  What did you think?
